Citric Acid- Is it Good or Bad for You?

Citric Acid- Is it Good or Bad for You?

Citric acid is one of the commonest food additives of today’s food supply. Yet, for a lot of people, it is still a mysterious ingredient. In certain countries, citric acid is an additive for cosmetics, foods, and other products.

Other functions of the this acid include its role as a flavor enhancer and a preservative.

Because you encounter it so much, one may wonder if they should use it more or avoid it.

What is Citric Acid and What does it Do?

Citric acid refers to a common food additive. It is naturally a  part of many citrus fruits as well as their juices. Chemically, it is a weak organic acid but not a mineral or vitamin because you do not need to take it in the diet. Citric acid is present naturally in plants or prepared in labs.

To synthetically produce its most common type, sugar is essential. The process involves providing sugar to a fungus called Aspergillus niger or black mold.

Sugar, extracted from beets, cane sugar, or corn syrup, is a type of feed for the fungus. Once the fungus feeds on it, it is mixed with other agents like potassium phosphate, ammonium nitrate, and zinc sulfate.

Over the course of 6 to 15 days, you are able to collect citric acid as a result of fermentation. This process dates back to the 1920s when the production of this acid on a commercial scale initiated.

Some of the most important and common uses of the citric acid include:

  • Adding it to food and drinks
  • Preservation of beverages and food, because of its ability to keep the ingredients stabilized
  • Playing the role of a chelating agent to preserve the texture of foods
  • Helping in buffering the ingredients
  • Acting as an alkalizing agent and a pH adjuster
  • Acting as a solvent for cleaning purposes
  • Imparting fragrance to cleaning and beauty products
  • Working as an anticoagulant by chelation of calcium present in the blood
Citric Acid- Is it Good or Bad for You?
Is Citric Acid Harmful to the Body?

Is citric acid dangerous? Can you consume it safely?

As per the Environmental Working group, citric acid may not act as potentially harmful or toxic. It is of low human health priority. Citric acid is also a safe agent for limited or specific use in food.

The risk of using citric acid on the skin is also low. Therefore, in most of the countries, there is no restriction in using it.

But what does citric acid do to your body? Some of its pros and cons include the following.

Potential Benefits
May have Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Effects

Certain studies indicate that citric acid possesses strong antioxidant properties. this means that it can fight oxidative stress and the damage due to free radicals. A 2014 study investigated the link between this acid and oxidative stress due to endotoxin on the brain and liver of mice.

The researchers found that citric acid can decrease the brain lipid peroxidation and inflammation, DNA fragmentation, and liver damage.

Studies also prove that citric acid decreases the lipid peroxidation and inflammation by decreasing the cell degranulation. It can also attenuate the release of inflammatory agents such as interleukin, elastase, and platelet factor 4.

Has an Alkalizing Effect

Citric acid is an alkalizing substance. Despite having an acidic taste, it can help counteract the effects of a lot of foods like processed grains or meat.

RELATED: Lemon water for acid reflux

Alkaline foods tend to have higher amounts of alkaline-forming minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium. This means that they can also aid in mineral absorption.

May Promote Endothelial Function

Research shows that citric acid can improve the endothelial functions. The endothelium is a thin membrane lining the inside of your blood vessels and heart. It helps promote vascular contraction and relaxation, immunity, platelet aggregation, and blood clotting.

This occurs due to the reduction of inflammatory markers. The salt present in citric acid, called citrates, act as anticoagulants because of their calcium-chelating abilities.

Helps Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are likely to form in an acidic urine. Citric acid, therefore, acts as a protective agent. The more citric acid you have in urine, the more protection it provides against these stones.

Both citric acid and potassium citrate are alkalizing agents meaning they make the urine less acidic. So, they can also prevent other conditions like gout, metabolic acidosis, and other problems of the kidney.

Citric acid may also prevent smaller stones from getting bigger and causing problems. It does so by coating them hence, not allowing them to attack to other stones.

May Support Skin Health

What can citric acid do to your skin?

It is an alpha hydroxyl acid and often a part of various skincare products. It helps to adjust the acidity in order to promote the regrowth of skin or skin peeling. You may spot it as a constituent of various anti-aging products such as masks, serums, and night creams.

It is an antioxidant which can help protect the skin from environmental damage, photo-aging, and oxidative stress.

Potential Side Effects

Why would citric acid be harmful to the body? Some people speculate the harmful effects, especially after an overconsumption. However, no clear evidence exists depicting this connection.

This definitely does not mean that it has absolutely no side effects. Some of its side effects are:

May Cause Skin Irritation

Certain people, especially those having a sensitive skin, citric acid causes irritation. It can even irritate your skin in the form of beauty or skin products. As a part of cleaning products, it can irritate your nasal passages. Sometimes, it may also stimulate the symptoms of asthma.

Citric Acid- Is it Good or Bad for You?

Often Consists of GMO Ingredients

Man-made citric acid commonly consists of sugars coming from corn and beets. This means that it may consist of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

May Worsen the Digestive Pains

If you have a low stomach acid, this does not mean that you have to avoid acidic foods. Acidic foods such as limes, lemons, and tomatoes can, in fact, induce alkalizing effects. These may start off as normal acidic foods but then become alkaline.

Note that the acidic foods do not lead to issues such as ulcers or acid refluxes. However, they may trigger the symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, or GERD.

A Low stomach acid may mean that your body is not producing hydrochloric acid.  You can help reverse it y consuming raw and cooked vegetables.

Increase your intake of potassium, magnesium, antioxidants, and fiber. Avoid using processed foods, added sugar, refined grains, and alcohol.

May be Associated with Mold Reactions

Studies do not show any side effects due to citric acid coming from Aspergillus. However, some worry that it can impair the immune system. Others believe that it can cause allergies and other symptoms if you inhale it.

The particular species of Aspergillus is not toxic or lethal most of the times. However, people with the already compromised immune system may damage their immunity.

Takeaway

So, what should be your take? Is citric acid bad for you? In most of the cases, it is harmful. However, as a part of packaged foods, it often contains GMO ingredients. So, it may cause allergies. It may be irritating to your digestive system or skin in certain cases.

At the same time, citric acid has some amazing benefits. All you need to do is use it carefully.

Does being busy affect your lifestyle?

Does being busy affect your lifestyle?

Every person who is always on the go and likes to keep himself busy, here is good news for them. Perhaps you don’t know but if you are following an extremely busy routine, it has unexpected health benefits.

A recent research suggests that busy people make healthy life choices for themselves. This study is published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

It is available online for reading. Click here to read it.

This research is conducted at the global business school INSEAD. This school has its sub-campuses in France, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi. Prof. Amitava Chattopadhyay, of INSEAD, led this study.

Additional researchers that worked on this study were as follows.

  • Monica Wadhwa (Fox School of Business at Temple University in Philadelphia)
  • Jeehye Christine Kim (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,)

This team together performed a series of studies. These studies investigated the life choices of participants having busy mindset or routine.

What were the results?

For all the participants of the study, the research team exposed a way of sending subtle messages that suggested that they are indeed very busy people. For example, a few of the participants were asked to pin down what are their engaging tasks. One control group was fixed that had no exposure to any activity that makes them busy.

Once all the participants reached a similar busy mindset, the researchers asked them to make a choice in various things. The results were based on this series of decisions that tell about their self-control and its relation to the state of mind.

Talking about the decisions, the participants were asked questions about general things like food, working out, retirement savings etc. There were no life-or-death decisions. Only those things that involve their daily routine were asked in this study.

In this study, those people who felt busy, as per reminding messages of their routine, made better decisions for themselves. It involves health choices as compared to those who were not given any busy schedule reminders prior to the testing.

The researchers emphasize the importance of daily decisions by telling that we have to make many choices that swing between our immediate and future well-being. When we perceive our self to be busy, automatically it boosts our self-esteem, motivation, and concentration. All of this leads towards making a good decision.

However, one should not ignore that this busy feeling is not always a positive thing. It can produce exact opposite effects too. The researchers point out that being busy sometimes can lead to stress and anxiety. If not controlled it will cause severe psychological disorders.

If someone has so many things to do but not a lot of time to do it, it is actually a good thing. At the same time, it may result in impulsive decisions that may be unhealthy for example quick eating quick, eating junk, not working out etc.

What does it suggest?

As per authors, being busy can boost your self-esteem and motivation that is not the case otherwise. Having so many things to do will make you give yourself a badge of honor. And that’s not all; it will also drive you to maintain it for long. Talking about the research, the busy participants made better and healthier choices than people who were not busy.

Self-esteem is not just related to the human psyche but overall health. A low self-esteem may cause stress, depression, anxiety, and negativity all leading towards bad decisions in life. It may end up causing failed relations, poor work performance, bad grades, addiction to drugs or alcohol and what not.

It is not a myth that you can boost your self-esteem all by yourself. Once a person is confident that he is managing so many things together, he starts to trust his capabilities. As long as there are no other factors to disturb, this way a person can make better decisions for himself.

Drinking In Pregnancy – What Can It Do?

Drinking In Pregnancy – What Can It Do?

Alcohol causes many different diseases when consumed in a high quantity. It may also be harmful when a person is suffering from a particular health condition. Women are also told to avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a health issue found in pregnant women.
Its risk is higher in women who consume a lot of alcohol during pregnancy. The consumed alcohol then reaches the fetus and inflicts damage on it and the mother both.
It is a disease which is transmitted from the mother to infant. The people infected with alcohol syndrome face various problems. They include a lack of motivation and attention.
The patients may feel disassociated and unable to perform simple tasks. This is because it affects the cognitive function of the brain. Little things like calculating and reading may become difficult.
Fetal alcohol syndrome only hits when you drink during pregnancy. It is one of the highest prevailing pregnancy linked diseases among women which don’t care about their alcohol consumption.
The only way to prevent the fetal alcohol syndrome is through avoiding the alcohol during pregnancy.
Drinking In Pregnancy - What Can It Do?
Which syndromes are part of fetal alcohol diseases?
There are a bunch of disorders which fall under fetal alcohol diseases. Women who drink alcohol give birth to the infected babies. These babies have some fetal alcohol spectrum disorders which are generally called FADs.
It is the term which is used for many disorders. They can be mild to severe, depending on which disorder is hitting the baby. Some major types of FASDs are as follows.
  • Complete fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)
  • Partial fetal alcohol syndrome
  • Alcohol-related birth defects
  • Alcohol-related neurodevelopment disorder
  •  A neurobehavioral disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure
Fetal alcohol syndrome is only the severe form of the condition. Other problems are generally regarded as less severe than it.
What causes fetal alcohol syndrome in infants?
When a woman is pregnant, things change for her in an abrupt manner. Drinking alcohol may seem very normal from the overview. But pregnancy is a condition of the body which makes it susceptible to various problems.
When a pregnant lady consumes alcohol, some part of it can reach easily to the fetus through the placenta. It is the normal practice of the body to process food and make it reach to the growing fetus.
It’s how it gets all its nutrition well. The body doesn’t realize that alcohol is not the nutritional thing for the baby.
The fetus doesn’t process alcohol the same way as it works for the normal adult people. For them, even the less is more. It is more concentrated and damaging in the fetus.
This concentrated fetus amount can prevent the nutritional ingredients. It may also affect the oxygen intake. So this means that fetus will not have enough of it.
The damage can start even in the first few weeks of pregnancy.  The risk is a lot higher if the pregnant mother is a heavy drinker.
Alcohol is one of the most harmful things during pregnancy. It damages the most in first three months of pregnancy when the fetus is rapidly growing. It doesn’t mean that you can take alcohol after three months. Alcohol, at any stage of pregnancy, is very destructive for the growing baby inside the womb.
What are the common symptoms of having a fetal alcohol syndrome?
Fetal alcohol is not one disease but a group of many interrelated diseases.  There won’t be the typical symptoms to tell that the baby is having fetal alcohol syndrome. The possibility is to have so many mixed symptoms at once. The severity of these symptoms ranges from low to high depending on the exposure to alcohol during pregnancy.
  • Having a small head.
  • A smooth ridge which is between the upper lip and nose.
  • Small and wide eyes.
  • Thin upper lip.
  • An abnormal facial feature.
  • A below average height.
  • Below average weight.
  • Feeling hyperactivity.
  • Lack of focus and concentration.
  • Difficulties in learning.
  • Difficulties in communication.
  • Irregular body coordination.
  • Delayed development linked problems i.e. thinking, social skills etc.
  • Visual and hearing disabilities
  • Heart and kidney problems.
  • Deformity in limbs.
  • Intense mood swings.
How to diagnose the fetal alcohol syndrome?
The earliest diagnosis is an only observation based. Once you have a suspicion of any abnormality, talk to your doctor and discuss it. You need to tell your history of drinking habits to predict the chances of having fetal alcohol syndrome.
The first thing which a doctor will do is a complete physical examination. As the baby matures, other signs will become obvious but at an infant level, there won’t be enough things to judge the condition. The earliest things to judge are as follows.
  • Growth rate
  • Abnormality in facial features
  • Deformity in bone growth
  • Hearing problems
  • Visionary problems
  • A below average head size
How to treat fetal alcohol syndrome?
Fetal alcohol syndrome is incurable. There are some helpful treatments to control the expression of the symptoms. If you can make an early diagnosis, it will be better for your baby to get a treatment.
In case, the diagnosis is delayed, the condition may be a lot more severe. Based on the obvious signs of FAS, the doctor will suggest the treatment options. In a growing age, these kids are given special education with speech therapies.
Self-help treatments
You can also contribute to the treatment options of your baby. The children suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome are usually more sensitive. Thus they need a special routine than normal kids.
The abrupt changes may make them depress or violent. It is common to see the mood swings in FAS suffering children. If you are helping your child to learn and overcome the situation, it will show a positive behavior.
Medicinal options for treatment
There are no as such medicines for fetal alcohol syndrome. There are medicines which help to overcome the symptoms. They remove the discomfort that your child may be facing. Some of these medicinal options are,
  • Stress relievers and antidepressant medicines
  • Stimulatory supplements
  • Neuroleptics
  • Medicines for anxiety
Special treatments
Fetal alcohol syndrome affected children need special treatments. These special treatments are not based on medicine or a surgery. They are done by specialist counseling. Behavioral training is which works best in such conditions.
This training may include the social skills, making friends, interaction and much more. Executive features may also include self-control, logical understanding, learning, cause and effect method.
These special treatments are not made by teachers. You need to attend a specialist for it. Sometimes support from family also contributes towards it. Parents also need special counseling sessions on raising a fetal alcohol syndrome affected the kid.
Alternative therapies
There are some treatment options which are not conventional but they work in some cases. They include healing practices such as massage and acupuncture techniques. They also include yoga, exercise, and other similar practices.
What Should You Keep In Mind?
Fetal alcohol syndrome is a disease which can leave your child impaired for the rest of his life. This disease only hits when you develop an excessive drinking habit during pregnancy. This alcohol reaches the growing baby in your womb and affects its development.
If you suspect that your child is also suffering from this condition, you need to arrange a meeting with your doctor as soon as possible. If you are a habitual drinker, you must retain a therapy first before getting pregnant.
Remember that the effects of alcohol have caused a permanent loss to the abilities of your newborn. To avoid this situation, leave the alcohol at least in the first few months of the pregnancy.

All You Need To Know About Antibiotic Resistance

All You Need To Know About Antibiotic Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance can result in reduced effectiveness and prevention of a big number of health conditions. Especially the ones caused by parasites, bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This is why it has become one of the major threats to global public health today.

The development is happening all around the world and many states have chosen to intervene. The first step was taking measures to counter the problem through the introduction of alternative treatments or resistance mechanisms.

Although the problem is well-known by a majority of the people nowadays, there are still a considerable number of people who don’t know.  Some of the everyday habits can put a person at the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Some of the examples of the habits that can increase the chances of antimicrobial resistance are using hand sanitizers. Also, taking medications as soon as the symptoms of a fever or any other illness start to occur.

Both of these can result in antibacterial overkill and hence antimicrobial resistance. Both of these are cited as ‘healthy habits’ by several people. These are also promoted commonly in different media channels.

All You Need To Know About Antibiotic Resistance

What Causes Antimicrobial Resistance?

The leading cause of developing antimicrobial resistance is taking too many antibiotics repeatedly which leads to the formation of bacteria. These are not affected by the drug and are commonly known as drug-resistant bacteria.

Bacteria are present in an abundant amount normally in human beings normally. Some of these are essential for the healthy functioning of the body. Others can be the reason behind illnesses and disorders.

Whenever a person is taking an antibiotic to supposedly fight off the harmful bacteria, he/she is also unknowingly killing off the beneficial bacteria in his/her body that are actually needed to manage the former.

Taking antibiotics without proper supervision can give a chance to the germs and the resistant bacteria to develop and multiply much quicker. Stopping resistant germs to divide is typically the job of the good bacteria that are killed by the antibiotics.

Antibiotic resistance is then, the ultimate result as the bacteria tend to change and adapt in a way they are no longer affected by the chemicals, antibacterial agents, or any of the usual prescription drugs taken by people.

Having this condition is more dangerous than some people assume as it can make the treatment of even the ‘minor’ disorders complication because no drug or medication seems to works on the disease-causing microbes.

How Do Bacteria Become Resistant?

How are bacteria able to overcome the effects of the drugs that are specifically formulated to target them and the infection they cause? This is a common question. There are a number of ways bacteria can become resistant.

Some of the bacteria gradually develop the ability to neutralize the antibiotic which makes it ineffective. Others switch their site rapidly and spread all over the body so that there are too many infections at once and some tend to pump out the antibiotics from the body.

The bacteria that can be treated easily with the use of proper antibiotics can also target the DNA and genetic material to enhance their defense mechanism. This can also make the body favor the harmful bacteria over the good ones.

Even if a small number of infectious bacteria are left behind, they can multiply and take the place of the essential bacteria that were killed as an effect of taking antibiotics. All of these situations make room for the formation of drug-resistant bacteria.

What Are The Dangers Of Antimicrobial Resistance?

In accordance with the World Health Organization, the patients having health conditions caused by drug-resistance microbes are automatically at a higher risk of having even worse issues, complications, and even death.

The patients with infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria also tend to need more medical attention and some more healthcare resources than the ones who are infected by microbes that are not resistant to antibiotics.

The World Health Organization also reported an increase in antimicrobial resistance</a> worldwide in 2012 with the highest one in resistance to drugs used in treatment o HIV.

Thenceforward, there was also an increase in first-line treatment drug resistance around that world which reportedly requires the development of much more advanced as well as expensive drugs in the coming future.

Antimicrobial resistance has now been seen in some of the most dangerous and life-threatening conditions. For example, there were around 480,000 cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis reported in a hundred countries.

The treatment required for drug-resistance tuberculosis takes a long time and comes with many severe symptoms than the normal tuberculosis infection.

In addition, a number of hospital-related infections are also caused by drug-resistant bacteria. There have recently been cases of hospital-acquired illnesses caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA.

Globally, the formation of various types of drug-resistant bacteria has been reported. Resistance has been observed in HIV, malaria, and even more common conditions such as pneumonia, gonorrhea, urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections and many more.

The most dangerous outcome of drug-resistance can be the loss of control over various types of infections such as tuberculosis which was one of the leading causes of death in the past centuries.

All You Need To Know About Antibiotic Resistance

What Are The Effects Of Antimicrobial Resistance?

In addition to making common illnesses which have been controlled complicated and dangerous once again, antimicrobial resistance can also increase the risk of many other health conditions. Some of the effects of antibacterial resistance are:

Heart Disease

According to an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine, taking the commonly prescribed medications, Erythromycin increases the risk of death due to a dangerous cardiovascular disease by 250 percent.

Cancer

The latest research on antibiotics makes it clear that the medicines themselves cannot really cause cancer. However, studies on the link between a high dosage of antibiotics and cancer have shown an increased risk of developing cancerous tumors specifically breast cancer.

The researchers have also found that the women who take antibiotics repeatedly have a higher risk of breast cancer. This is because a high antibiotic consumption affects the metabolism, immune functions and inflammation of phytochemicals and estrogen.

Allergies

Studies on the effects of taking too many antibiotics have now also shown that it has links with the global rise in various kinds of sensitivities and allergies such as food allergies.

This is seen more specifically in children since they are given medicines as soon as signs of illness start to appear in them.

According to a study published in Journal of Allergies and Clinical Immunology, using antibiotics in the first year of a child’s life can result in increased risk of asthma and eczema by the age of 6 or 7.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has also shown that many children are given antibiotics despite having conditions caused by viruses. The CDC reports 40% of the upper respiratory infections that are viral are prescribed antibiotics.

Digestive issues

Taking too many antibiotics without proper supervision can kill off the good bacteria required by the body. Some of the bacteria which are known as the gut microbes are needed for proper functioning of the digestive system.

They help in absorbing nutrients from the foods in the diet, keeping infections caused by bad bacteria away, balance the pH levels, and provide feedback to the brain. Gut bacteria can also be killed off with too many antibiotics.

This can cause a lot of health issues including development of digestive disorders, nutritional deficiencies since the body will not be able to absorb the nutrients, bloating, constipation, and problems in digestion.

Top 6 Fermented Foods to Boost Your Digestive Health

Top 6 Fermented Foods to Boost Your Digestive Health

Fermentation is a process in which the bacterial and yeast strains break down sugars. Can these fermented foods be of any help to your digestive system?

This not only helps improve food preservation but also increases the beneficial bacteria of the gut. These probiotics, in turn, carry a number of health benefits. They may include an enhanced immunity, an improved digestion, and even weight loss.

This article analyzes certain fermented foods and their role in improving digestion.

Kefir

You may know kefir as a form of cultured dairy products. Its production involves adding kefir grains (made from yeast and bacteria) into the milk. This leads to the formation of a thick, tangy beverage, just like yogurt.

The use of kefir is associated with a number of health benefits. By improving digestion to reducing inflammation, kefir has several roles to play.

7 Reasons Why You Should Consume Kefir

In one study, scientists found that kefir improved lactose digestion in 15 participants. Note that all these participants were suffering from lactose intolerance. This means that they are not able to digest sugars present in dairy products. Consuming such products, therefore, leads to symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, and cramps.

Another study indicated that consumption of kefir decreases inflammation markers. The participants used 6.7 ounces of kefir every day for six weeks. The reduction in inflammation markers caused a consequent decrease in risk of chronic diseases.

Kefir can also help enhance the health of your bones. One study involved 40 participants suffering from osteoporosis. This is a problem in which your bones become weak and porous.

After six months, the group consuming kefir experienced improvement in their bone mineral density.

You can enjoy kefir directly or add it to your smoothies or blended drinks.

Tempeh

Insulin is responsible for the transportation of glucose from the blood into the tissues. When you maintain high insulin levels for a long time, your body does not respond to it. This results in insulin resistance leading to high blood pressure.

In one study, scientists checked 21 people with prediabetes. They instructed these people to consume kimchi, either in fresh or fermented form. The study continued for eight weeks. By the end, those who consumed fermented kimchi experienced a decreased blood pressure. They also reported a reduction in their insulin resistance and body weight.

In another study, the scientist gave people a diet with high or low quantities of kimchi. This continued for seven days straight. A higher consumption of kimchi caused more reduction in blood sugar. It also decreased LDL cholesterol and total blood cholesterol.

It is quite easy to make kimchi. You can add it in almost everything- even noodle bowls and sandwiches.

Is the Keto Diet More Effective than a Vegan Diet?

Is the Keto Diet More Effective than a Vegan Diet?

You don’t need to spend a lot of time on social media before coming across a post about weight loss.

It might be someone bragging about their newest weight loss target. Or the post may lament about their diet being too restrictive for them.

Weight loss is, in fact, a multibillion-dollar industry in the U.S. As per the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 2 in 3 adults are obese or overweight.

What’s more, about 1 out of every six individuals between the ages of 2 to 19 are obese.

It is common for healthcare professionals to look for reliable strategies for weight loss. At the same time, extreme diet plans and weight loss schemes ebb and flow in terms of popularity.

Two of these plans include the ketogenic and the vegan diet. Both of these diet plans are quite opposite in terms of their food strategies. However, both of them are equally popular for their claims to shed pounds.

But do these plans actually work? Which of them is better than the other? Keep reading to find out.

Keto versus Vegan Diet

The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. It focuses more on sources of fat such as avocados and dairy products, with protein in moderation. The keto diet especially puts restrictions on taking any kind of carbohydrates.

This, in turn, leaves out a lot of vegetables, grains, and fruit. Sugar is also not on the list of foods you can eat during a keto diet.

Is the Keto Diet More Effective than a Vegan Diet?

Following the keto diet may also mean saying goodbye to your favorite dishes. These may include pasta, white rice, pizzas, and bread. You will also have to give up cakes, pastries, cookies, and sweets.

On the other hand, the vegan diet is a plant-based diet plan. It tends to eliminate every food item coming from animal sources. At the same time, it puts a lot of focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Research indicates that both of these diet plans can ultimately cause weight loss. What it takes to get there and how you sustain is are some factors that determine success in the long term.

How does the Keto Diet Work?

The human body tends to store carbohydrates in the form of glycogen. It is the primary source of energy for your body. You have a steady supply of this agent in your body.

Your body tends to burn down the carbs you eat and convert it into glycogen to extract energy. If you eliminate all the carbs from the diet, your body uses up all the reserves. As it loses glycogen, the body gets rid of all the excess water that glycogen holds.

As a result, you immediately lose several pounds due to water weight.

In a matter of days, your body enters a metabolic state- the state of ketosis. In this state, your body starts using fat to derive energy since there are no carbs left.

As the body breaks down fat, it also helps suppress cravings. You tend to feel fuller for longer, cutting down the total amount of food you eat. Some people even start intermittent fasting during keto to sustain their weight loss.

How does the Vegan Diet Work?

In case of vegan diet, the dieter eats a diet low in fat and protein. In fact, the overall caloric intake is also low. This makes people feel that they may eat all day while losing weight.

In fact, research indicates that vegans are thinner and have a lower BMI as compared to non-vegans. They also have lower levels of cholesterol.

By the nature of food, vegans eat, plant-based eaters also consume more minerals, vitamins, and nutrients. Their average calorie consumption is also lower than non-vegans.

The Science of Keto and Vegan Diets

One of the studies suggests that vegans lost 9.3 pounds more than individuals not following this diet. The study, which lasted for a year, didn’t ask participants to perform exercise or reduce daily calories.

In the existing mice studies, the keto diet tends to show improvements in weight loss. It showed promising results in decreasing obesity and related conditions like diabetes type 2.

RELATED: How Can You Measure Ketosis Using Keto Strips

A great deal of research regarding keto diet involves mice and rat models only. There are very few human studies, but more are in progress due to the increasing popularity of the keto diet.

A study of 2009 found that most people on a low-carb diet no longer observe ketosis after 6 months. Another research investigated weight loss in keto-fed rats. During this 22-week study, no maintenance of weight loss occurred.

A reason for this is that dieters return to their dietary preferences after some time. This might be because of the stalling weight loss results or a diet plan too hard to follow.

Research even says that keto dieters lose a great deal of lean body mass. The lean body mass is the muscle burning calories and helping your metabolism to run. This may affect your weight loss abilities in the near future.

No Quick Fixes

The experts mostly stress on the fact that there are no quick fixes in terms of weight loss. It requires constant work and determination, especially to make it sustainable.

Is the Keto Diet More Effective than a Vegan Diet?

Changing the habits are extremely difficult. Making huge lifestyle changes overnight is also very tough. Even if you do so, reintroducing old lifestyle after some time is not easy as well, as per the experts.

Ultimately, the prescription of weight loss turns out to be a highly specific one. It is, in fact, the one that works for you and suits you the best.

It is important to formulate a plan which is sustainable and acceptable. It all depends on your individual food preferences, lifestyles, and motivation. Combine all of this to change what failed you in the past.

The Bottom Line

The ketogenic diet and vegan diet are two extremely popular diets. They are totally opposite in terms of food strategy. However, both of them are equally popular for their effects in terms of weight loss.

Most of the experts are going to tell you that they are equally effective. This means that you can expect weight loss irrespective of what diet you follow. However, the results may not last until you sustain it into your new lifestyle.

Most of the people on the keto diet tend to lose weight in the short run. However, they may also lose mean muscle mass at the same time. Some studies even suggest that some people naturally get off ketosis 6 months after the diet. In other cases, individuals just seem to give this diet up because it may prove extremely restrictive.

Experts are of the opinion that a successful diet is actually a sustainable diet. It is the one that individuals can benefit from in the long run. They also believe that it does not matter whether it is the keto diet or the vegan diet.
