For the first time, this study identifies a new molecular switch. It is an unfolded protein response or UPR, which is responsible for activating the process of autophagy. This process then controls the fate of milk producing breast cells. This research is a proof that apoptosis is a different pathway from the UPR/autophagy, although both of these processes work together.

Autophagy and breast cancer

The research team examined a two-stage process of breast remodeling. It is a stage that comes after breastfeeding naturally and is called involution. In later stages, the breast cells follow their survival mechanism to proceed with the process of lactation using milk ducts. It occurs when the mother takes short breaks from breastfeeding. At this point, this process is called reversible involution.

On a contrast, at this second stage, the breast cells turn on their mode of self-destruction. It helps the mammary glands to return to their normal, non-lactating state. Here, this process is called irreversible involution.
